Immediate Dentures - Immediate Results

What are immediate dentures?

Immediate dentures are removable prosthetics made for the top jaw, lower jaw, or both. They are delivered at the time of tooth removal so you will always have teeth.

Due to health and lifestyle choices, teeth don’t always last. Fortunately, there are advanced tooth replacement options. Immediate dentures are a good and viable option for many patients facing tooth loss.

Benefits of immediate dentures

  • Most economical form of tooth replacement
  • Excellent aesthetics
  • Teeth can be immediately replaced at surgery
  • Immediate relief of tooth problems

Who is a good candidate?

  • Patients who have battled tooth decay for a long time.
  • Patients who have many missing teeth and are looking for a long-term solution.
  • Patients who have battled periodontal disease unsuccessfully for many years with refractory periodontitis.

Patients with healthy teeth are not candidates for immediate dentures. Dr. Damon and Dr. Blankenship will never recommend immediate dentures to improve aesthetics.

Why choose Dr. Damon and Dr. Blankenship to provide your immediate dentures?

Dr. Damon and Dr. Blankenship will provide IV sedation to make the process pain and anxiety free for the patient as the entire process includes multiple tooth extractions and bone management to make the jaws acceptable for dentures.

Many dentists give only oral sedation or perform this surgery while their patient is awake. Yet, neither of those treatment modalities works predictably for multiple extractions. With IV sedation, Dr. Damon and Dr. Blankenship tailor the dose of the medication directly to your needs allowing a comfortable procedure for the doctor and patient. Our staff has performed more than 3,000 successful and safe IV sedation.

We also provide monthly soft liners, temporary “liners” that help the dentures fit better during the healing phase. Liners are essential to maintaining patient comfort during the first few months. Our staff is well-trained and will address your concerns and help you adjust to your new lifestyle with dentures.

What to do once you receive immediate dentures?

We deliver immediate dentures at the time of surgery. Typically, we place a soft liner at the time of teeth removal which will be changed out at one to two weeks after the operation and suture removal.

  • We encourage patients to wear their immediate dentures as much as possible. It will take a week or two to adjust; however, it’s important to wear the immediate dentures to get used to wearing teeth.
  • Patients learn first how to keep the dentures in, then learn how to speak, and lastly how to swallow, chew, and eat.
  • A liquid diet is recommended for a few weeks, followed by a soft diet for two weeks. Depending on how the patient feels, solid food may be added to the diet.
  • At the second post operation appointment, we place new soft liner and remove the sutures. This may be postponed if healing is slower than normal.
  • Soft liners are replaced per the patient’s request once every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Denture adjustments are done as needed with a simple phone call.
  • After 4 to 6 months of healing, we reline or rebase the dentures so that you don’t have to buy two sets (immediate and final). A rebase will get your denture 100% new and ready for 5 to 7 years of service.
  • After 2 to 3 years, a reline is indicated.
  • At 5 to 7 years, a new set will be indicated.
